August Parent Letter
August 28, 2008 Dear Parents and Guardians:
I would like to take this opportunity to "welcome you" to a new year at Philips and I look forward to collaborating and working with you and your student. I am very enthusiastic and optimistic that all Philips employees are committed to making Philips Elementary the best school it can be.
We would like you to joint us in welcoming the following new staff to the Philips community: Mike Gropper (Autism) Marianne Pritchard (Fifth Grade) Jessica Pratt ( ECE) Loretta Foyle (Art) Jareda Parrish (Kindergarten) Holly Swank-Cummings (ESL) Wanda Lenox (First Grade) Timothy Brown (Music) Brittany Goss (Second Grade)
With the addition of these new staff members, we are planning at least three music and art programs for the parents and community. We are also working in collaboration with Art Reach and hope to bring more cultural events into the lives of our students as well as after school programs.
We are a Positive Behavior System (PBS) and as a school we have adopted policies which focus on the positive behavior of students and you can help by reinforcing the standards of good behavior and actions that we will be emphasizing each day. You may hear your students say that they received "Gotchas" today, where they will be able to participate in drawings to reinforce their positive behavior and actions. This is also an opportunity for you to reinforce and reward your student for their good behavior.
We are also holding students accountable for their behavior, actions and choices by using what we call the "Stop Light" system. Students begin the day on "Green", if two warnings are issued, the student moves to "Yellow", if the student is on "Yellow" and continues to choose to misbehave, they will be moved to "Orange" which means the student will do a refocus form in-classroom/slow down and think about the offending behavior. When a student is on "Orange" and improve their behavior, they have an opportunity to make a U-Turn and go back up the stop light. If the student behavior persists, they will move to "Red" which means they will refocus in another classroom and the form will be sent home to be signed and returned to the classroom teacher; possibly a phone call will be made by the classroom teacher. When students show exceptionally good behaviors (Super Stars) throughout the week, they will be recognized by their classroom teacher, and will have lunch and a special treat with the principal once a month.
This year we are delighted to already have several parents sign up to volunteer in the classrooms, and if you too would like to volunteer, please let your child's teacher know, and come to the office for a Volunteer Sign-Up form. We are also hoping to assemble a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) this year to coordinated activities, assist with school programs and field day, and raise funds for special occasions as determined by the PTA. To find out more, please attend the first meeting which will be held on Tuesday, October 7th at 5:00 p.m. in the Community Room, or contact Robin Hammons in the office.
We have already begun assembling a Collaborative School Committee (CSC) which brings the community and the school together to discuss ideas, problems and solutions to make Philips the best school in the district and the best environment for your student. To participate in CSC, please attend the first meeting on September 18th at 5:30 p.m. in the Community Room, when sign-up forms will be available.
Just a few reminders regarding school operations: Office hours are 8:00 to 4:30 p.m. Kindergarten through Fifth grade student day is from 8:55 to 3:45 p.m. ECE student day is from 9:00 to 3:30 p.m. Breakfast is served from 8:20 to 8:55 a.m.
For the safety and security of our students, students are not to arrive prior to breakfast time because we cannot provide adult supervision prior to that time. Please do not allow your students to arrive before 8:20. Also, students are to be picked-up promptly after school; however, if you are running a bit late, please contact the office.
Back to School Night will be Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there. There will be a message from Michael Bennett, our District Superintendent.
Currently we have Gold-C coupon books on sale in the office. Each book costs $10 and can save you hundreds at vendors such as: McDonalds, Burger King, Popeye's, Dominos Pizza, Carl's Jr., Safeway, Boondocks, Denver Art Museum and Paradise Cleaners, just to name a few!
Our annual fundraiser with the Believe Company will kick-off on September 22, 2008, and all orders and payments must be returned to the school by Monday, October 6, 2008. Orders without payments will not be submitted. Funds raised will help to supplement the field trips and student activities throughout the school year.
